About the UNICEF Child Protection Officer Position
UNICEF is recruiting a Child Protection Officer for Bhasan Char under a 364-day Temporary Appointment based in the Cox’s Bazar duty station in Bangladesh. The vacancy is listed at NO-1 level under UNICEF’s Child Protection functional area and carries Job Number 595190. UNICEF advertised the position on 19 August 2026 and lists 26 August 2026 as the application deadline.
The role is focused on child-protection programming in a complex humanitarian and refugee setting. According to the official vacancy, around 70% of the officer’s time will support planning, implementation, monitoring and reporting for the child protection programme in Bhasan Char. The remaining 30% will support the Cox’s Bazar programme, particularly programme monitoring and community-based child protection.
Main Responsibilities
The Child Protection Officer will provide technical, operational and administrative support across the child-protection programming cycle. UNICEF groups the key duties into programme development and planning, programme management and monitoring, technical and operational support, networking and partnership building, and innovation, knowledge management and capacity building.
The position also requires close coordination with Bhasan Char stakeholders and relevant coordination structures in Cox’s Bazar. This includes engagement with child protection and gender-based violence coordination mechanisms and associated working groups so that support for children and families follows agreed standards and sector guidance.
Education and Experience Requirements
Applicants need a bachelor’s degree or equivalent first-level university degree in Social Science, Law, Social Work or another related field. UNICEF requires at least one year of relevant work experience in Child Protection.
The vacancy also asks for experience working with the United Nations, non-governmental organisations or relevant sectors and subsectors, together with strong coordination and communication skills. Fluency in both English and Bangla is required.
Experience That Can Strengthen an Application
UNICEF lists several desirable qualifications. Knowledge of another official UN language can be an asset, while working knowledge of Chittagonian, Rohingya or Burmese may also be useful. Capacity-building and training skills, experience in refugee settings, knowledge of community-based child-protection systems and child-protection information management, and strong organisational and written communication abilities can strengthen a candidate’s profile.
Relevant country-level experience in development, fragile settings or humanitarian contexts is also identified as desirable. Candidates should read the complete terms of reference on the UNICEF vacancy page before applying because the detailed job description contains the full scope of responsibilities.
